Windows XP Support Ending Soon
As you may have heard, Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows XP, effective April 8th of this year. There is no reason to panic about this, but you do need to start planning for the eventual replacement of your XP computers - especially if they are part of your point-of-sale system network.
The big problem with losing Microsoft support is that security updates will no longer be available. Those updates protect against viruses and malware. Most anti-virus and anti-malware companies plan to continue to support XP for now, but they can only detect and remove bugs; not prevent them. Another problem is that other software providers will start to discontinue support for XP.
So, what should you do?
Before April 8th, make sure your anti-virus software is current on your XP PCs; add anti-malware software, if you don't already have it; and make sure that you have a very secure firewall. These things are even more important once support for XP is discontinued.
You should also start budgeting for eventual replacement of your XP PCs and POS terminals.
Finally, if you have XP PCs or terminals that are part of your POS network, check to make sure that your existing POS software supports PCs running the newer Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system. If not, you'll need to begin budgeting for a software upgrade, too.

After over 30 years in downtown Seattle (20 of them in the same building!), we've moved to North Seattle. Our new office space is a few blocks north of North Seattle Community College, on Meridian Avenue. Northgate Mall is due east of us on the other side of I5. Our new address is 10303 Meridian Avenue N., Suite 103, Seattle, WA, 98133. Our phone, fax, and email addresses remain unchanged.
Our office is on the southwest corner of the first floor. It is great to look out the window and see more trees than buildings.
